The ZEISS METROTOM 1 is an industrial CT scanner that measures and inspects the inside of a part without cutting it open. One scan captures the full internal and external geometry of components up to 5 kg, inside a 165 x 140 mm measuring volume, and ZEISS INSPECT turns that volume into dimensional results, porosity maps and CAD comparisons.
What is the ZEISS METROTOM 1?
The ZEISS METROTOM 1 is a compact industrial computed tomography system that captures a complete 3D model of a part — inside and out — in a single non-destructive scan. It uses a 160 kV X-ray source and a ZEISS-developed 2.5k detector to reach voxel sizes down to 32.6 µm, with results evaluated in ZEISS INSPECT.
Physically it is a cabinet, not a benchtop unit: 1750 mm wide, 1820 mm tall and around 2,100 kg, with the X-ray tube fully enclosed. ZEISS specifies the closed tube as a low-maintenance design, and the system is built to be started by ordinary production and QC staff rather than a trained radiographer. You load the part on the rotation table, close the door and press one button.

How does industrial CT inspection actually work?
The part rotates 360° on a turntable while an X-ray source fires through it and a detector records thousands of 2D projections from every angle. Software reconstructs those projections into a voxel volume — a solid 3D model where every point carries a density value — which can then be sliced, measured and compared against CAD.
The practical consequence is the whole point of the machine. Because density is recorded rather than just surface position, a void sitting 8 mm inside a moulded housing shows up as clearly as a chamfer on the outside edge. You are not inferring what happened internally from an external measurement, and you are not cutting a sample to find out.

FAQ
01 What can you measure with CT that you cannot measure any other way?
Anything enclosed. Internal voids, porosity, blowholes, cracks, wall thickness in a cavity you cannot reach with a probe, the seating of an insert inside an overmould, whether a connector’s internal contacts sat where the tool intended.
Optical and tactile systems only ever see the outside. A CMM probe cannot enter a sealed chamber and a structured-light scanner cannot see past the first surface. Every one of those inspections has traditionally been answered by cutting the part, which destroys it and gives you one cross-section, chosen by whoever held the saw. CT gives you every cross-section, and the part survives.
For external geometry on larger parts, most customers pair this with a ZEISS T-SCAN hawk 2 handheld 3D laser scanner or a ZEISS GOM Scan 1.
02 Who is the METROTOM 1 for?
ZEISS positions it for small to medium-sized parts made of plastic or light metal — electronics, semiconductors, connectors, plastic caps, aluminium castings — and across aerospace industry. If your parts fit inside 165 x 140 mm and weigh under 5 kg, this is the right end of the METROTOM range.
It is aimed at teams who need CT often enough that sending parts out has become the bottleneck. ZEISS built it for companies inspecting small to medium-sized batches; in practice that means tool rooms validating a first shot, QC teams facing customer audits, and R&D groups who would rather look inside a prototype than argue about it.
03 Where the METROTOM 1 struggles
The hard limits are the easy part: 165 x 140 mm of measuring volume and 5 kg on the rotation table. Outside those numbers the answer is no, and no amount of setup changes it.
The softer limit is material. ZEISS scopes the METROTOM 1 to plastic and light metal, and how far a 160 kV source gets through a given part depends on its density, its wall thickness and how much material the beam has to cross — which is why a thin aluminium casting can be fine while a solid one the same size is not. That is a question to settle with a sample scan rather than a spec sheet, and it is exactly what the free scan is for.
Two more things worth saying out loud. It is a 2,100 kg cabinet that needs a proper floor and a real installation, not a corner of the QC bench. And CT does not replace a CMM on every job — where you only need external features to a tight tolerance, a ZEISS DuraMax is faster and cheaper per part. There is no one-size-fits-all solution here, and we would rather say so now than sell you the wrong machine.
